“Govt Closely Monitoring Awami League’s Overseas Activities Despite Domestic Ban: Press Secretary”

Although activities of the Awami League are banned in the country, the government is closely monitoring its activities abroad, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said. He made the remarks on Sunday (August 10) at a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital, regarding the Chief Adviser’s upcoming visit to Malaysia, in response to questions from journalists.

Shafiqul Alam said, “Their activities are banned in Bangladesh, so we are closely monitoring their activities abroad.” He further stated that it is also being investigated whether the Awami League is trying to create any instability across the country.

Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Adviser, Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar, and Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Shah Asif Rahman were also present at the press conference.

Recently, a BBC Bangla report claimed that an Awami League “party office” has been opened in a commercial complex in Kolkata.

In May this year, the interim government banned all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations under the Anti-Terrorism Act until the trial at the International Crimes Tribunal is concluded. The gazette notification strictly prohibited publication, media contact, promotion through online and social media, as well as organizing processions, meetings, rallies, and conferences.

Earlier, at a special meeting of the Advisory Council, a decision was made to ban all types of Awami League activities, including on cyber platforms, under the Anti-Terrorism Act. At that time, Law Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul had said the decision was taken to protect national security and sovereignty, ensure the safety of July Movement leaders and activists, and safeguard the security of witnesses and plaintiffs in the tribunal.
